What’s New and Good This October in Entertainment
CORRALLING WHAT’S NEW AND GOOD EACH MONTH IN ENTERTAINMENT NEWS (AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN)
October is ripe with classic horror movies, scary soundtracks and, of course, Michael Jackson’s Thriller. As a film and recording school, we celebrate this month wholly. From fright nights, movie screenings and horror film releases, we’re here to let you know the best (and scariest) things in entertainment this month.
We love hearing what our students and alumni are up to! If you are a student or alumni working on a Halloween-themed project, we’d love to hear about it. Email us at social@lafilm.edu and tell us about what scary script or sinister score you’re creating.
FILM
VENOM
Technically, the new Marvel movie, Venom, isn’t a horror movie, but its twisted plot deserves a spot on October’s scary release list. This is the latest superhero film, starring Tom Hardy as Venom and supporting roles by Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed (just to name a few). The movie has had cautious hype behind it, so we’ll see what director Ruben Fleischer has in store for this Spider-Man villain. Venom is in theaters Friday, October 5. Go see it to find out for yourself!
FUN FACT:
LARS alumnus, Robert Thomas Pedroza (ASRA 2013), worked as a rigging electrician on the film.
He has an impressive list of credits including Ozark, The Walking Dead, Insatiable, Good Girls and other productions.
HALLOWEEN
It’s back (again). The latest film in this long-standing franchise actually does away with the previous sequels with a blink of an eye and links itself to John Carpenter’s original 1978 horror classic. It brings back Jamie Lee Curtis as her character, Laurie Strode, encounters her final showdown with the crazed killer, Michael Myers. This is the eleventh Halloween movie in the franchise and is directed by David Gordon Green, yes, the same director of Pineapple Express and Eastbound & Down. Don’t worry horror film fans, David Gordon Green got his blessing from John Carpenter. Halloween movie hits theaters Friday, October 19.
SUSPIRIA
The disturbing new horror film from director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name; A Bigger Splash) follows a world-renowned dance company led by a fearsome director and her timid troupe. The trailer leaves you uneasy and wanting to watch this reboot of Dario Argento’s 70s mystery/horror movie. Word is that the ballet scenes match the intensity and mood of the sinister secrets the school hides. Suspiria hits theaters Friday, October 26.
GOOSEBUMPS 2: HAUNTED HALLOWEEN
R.L. Stine captivated young audiences everywhere with his bestselling series, Goosebumps. Now, you can relive the fun for a second time with Goosebumps 2, the theatrical release of the classic Goosebump tales. In theaters on Friday, October 12.
THE WALKING DEAD
The Walking Dead’s ninth-season premieres with a fresh look for the opening-credit sequence. The new, graphic-style opening gives audiences a few clues about the direction this season is headed. There’s a definite shift from destruction to reconstruction and new hope looms, but don’t be too optimistic about this “brighter” future. The ninth-season premieres on Sunday, October 7, on AMC.
