Enola Holmes (Netflix, September, 23)

Did we know Sherlock Holmes had a kid sister? Well, we do now. Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown shines in Netflix’s upcoming and highly-anticipated film. Chronicling Enola Holmes as she searches for her mother and closest companion (Helena Bonham Carter) who mysteriously vanished, the young and bright protagonist takes the reins from her famous brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and other brother Mycroft (Sam Claflin) and sets out on an exciting hunt. Early reviews praise this adaptation of the young adult mystery series by the same name from Nancy Springer, promising the birth of a new fun, energetic and family-friendly franchise. The game is afoot!

Vampires vs The Bronx (Netflix, October 2)

Our very own film alum Oz Rodriguez directed his first feature film for Netflix as part of its “Netflix and Chills” series for October. Vampires vs The Bronx is a horror-comedy that focuses on a group of young friends fighting to save their neighborhood from gentrification. Some cinephiles are already likening the film to Attack the Block but with vampires instead of aliens, according to the JoBlo movie network blog.

Oz, who is a native Dominican living in New York City, wanted to cast as many New York actors as he could to make the movie feel more authentic. “As a Dominican, I was excited to work with so many great Dominican actors like Jaden, Kid Mero, Vlad, Judy and the newcomer Zoe Saldaña,” Rodriguez said in an interview with Screen Rant. Saldaña has a brief cameo in the movie. “It was a challenging shoot but our young trio of vampire killers Jaden, Gregory and Gerald made it look easy,” said Rodriguez.

The Haunting of Bly Manor (Netflix, October 9)

Okay, it’s time to get in the mood for Halloween. Netflix released a creepy and cryptic teaser of its upcoming mini-series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, the second installment in the anthology series that began with 2018’sThe Haunting of Hill House. Directed by Mike Flanagan (Doctor SleepAbsentia) who also created, directed, produced, wrote and edited the series’ prequel, this six-part series will be released in one eerie drop, so you can look away or stay up all night as you choose.

Based on the 1898 Gothic horror novella, The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, the story follows a completely new family from The Haunting of Hill House, but there will be clues of connection throughout the series. Flanagan told Entertainment Weekly “There’s not a narrative connection, but there are little Easter eggs, for sure, not only in small details but in moments of dialogue and in some of the ideas from Hill House. There are definitely going to be things that will set off that little dopamine rush that those kind of connections create. But it’s not a direct connection from a story point of view.” The series description confirms “dead doesn’t mean gone”, so settle in for an intensely creepy and thrilling experience.

Unsolved Mysteries: Volume 2 (Netflix, October 19)

It’s time to cue your inner sleuth and crack a cold case or two! We were all thrilled when Netflix picked up our old favorite Unsolved Mysteries for a dozen episodes, which originally premiered on NBC in 1987. This past July the first 6 episodes dropped and it simply wasn’t enough. The internet was immediately ablaze with tips, clues and opinions on the first round of mysteries, flooding the Unsolved Mysteries Reddit sub set up to receive welcome tips on the unsolved cold cases. “Hey guys, Netflix here! We’ve created a public drive with all the assembled evidence, case files, interviews, and video clips for each story that didn’t make it into the final episodes,” reads the post on the Unsolved Mysteries subreddit. One of the 30-year-old cold cases is even on the verge of being solved because of one of these tips!

In perfect timing with the mood of Halloween, the next 6 episodes will drop mid-October. Netflix has yet to release the premise of these episodes– except for one, which is confirmed to be a ghost story. It has also been confirmed that two of the upcoming stories will be based on international stories. So get out your (Enola) Sherlock hat and get ready for another wave of cold case mysteries.

Rebecca (Netflix, October 21)

The classic psychological, romantic, mystery thriller is back. Based on the 1938 Gothic novel by English author Dame Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca tells the tale of a young woman (Lily James) who falls in love with a wealthy widower (Armie Hammer) whose late wife is the title character. The memory of Rebecca is kept alive by an ominous and mysterious housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas). This year’s remake is directed by Ben Wheatley (Dr. Who) and is written by Jane Goldman, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse.

The most famous film adaptation of Rebecca was a 1940 Oscar Winner, and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, so take that as a clue as to the intensity and unexpected turns held in the story. Be sure to see this visually beautiful and psychological mystery!

The Mandalorian: Season 2 (Disney Plus, October 30)

The Child, our favorite 50-year infant of the Master Jedi race, will grace our screens again this fall, along with our number one Mandalorian, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal). Season Two’s directors were appropriately confirmed on Star Wars Day, May 4th as Robert Rodriquez (Spy Kids) and Peyton Reed (Ant-Man), and they’re directing more story than ever. The show’s creator, Jon Favreau is hinting that the upcoming season will be bringing higher-stakes and will be bigger on every scale. Disney has taken Season One’s budget and allocated an additional $100 million to Season 2, so there’s plenty of reason to expect more characters, more weapon-slinging showdowns, and more of the clash between good and evil coming to your star system.

The Crown: Season 4 (Netflix, November 15)

Dropping in its entirety (isn’t that everyone’s favorite way?), The Crown: Season 4 will be arriving just in time for a Thanksgiving weekend binge. Season 4 was filmed immediately after Season 3, allowing their production and release schedule to remain unaugmented by the pandemic. Filming was well underway even last November, when Season 3 was airing.

Emma Corrin is joining the Season 4 cast as – you guessed it – Princess Diana, who will be playing alongside Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles. We’re most looking forward to seeing the recreation of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s iconic 1983 Australian tour, which was actually filmed in Spain. Outside of these new additions, the rest of the cast will mostly remain fixed from Season 3. Peter Morgan famously recast the entire cast between Season 2 and 3 and will most likely do so again between season 4 and 5, keeping the cast fixed again between Season 5 and 6 –  a bold move which has proven to be masterful, enabling the show to realistically chronicle the reign of Queen Elizabeth of England through the decades, urging us to exclaim from our couch “God save the queen!”.
