L.A. Film School Represents at Sunday’s Big Game
Seven members of The L.A. Film School had their hands in everything from the halftime show trailer to Super Bowl commercials.
Whether you’re a football fan or not, Sunday’s Big Game was one for the books. The Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals in a matchup that piqued most locals’ interest because of #LApride. As a Film School, our eyes were glued to the television mainly for the halftime show, TBH. Television’s biggest stage shined bright as legendary rap and hip-hop artists performed throwback hits from the late ’90s and early ‘00s. Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and surprise performer 50 Cent ascended the stage garnering millions of views across NBC streaming and cable networks.
As one of America’s most-watched live performances, the halftime show takes immense effort from production crews including, audiovisual, sound engineers, stage managers and camera ops. The entire show is constructed on the field in mere minutes, according to sound engineer Patrick Baltzell. Productions crews race against the clock to build the stage on the field. The window of time from the end of the first half to the beginning of the halftime show is between six and seven minutes, says Baltzell.
While the halftime show is one of the main attractions for the Big Game, the commercials also draw a large viewership. Several of our very own alumni and an instructor separately contributed to Super Bowl commercials for Jeep®, T-Mobile and Expedia. We are proud of those who represented The L.A. Film School community and played an important part in making this year’s game the most entertaining one yet.
Highlights from The L.A. Film School’s Involvement in Super Bowl LVI
You may have seen two of our instructors on the big screen last week. Mike McCaffery, lead instructor in Writing for Film & TV, had a two-second cameo in the Uber Eats commercial. McCaffery is seen holding a lightbulb and contemplating whether or not to “Eats” it. We’d also like to recognize Marq Hawkins, Liberal Arts instructor for Media and Culture, who interviewed with FOX 11 about his friendship and working relationship with Dr. Dre.
