One of this past year’s critical successes was the comedic drama, The Big Short. A darkly humorous take on the sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2008, the film’s quick cuts, ensemble cast and sharp dialogue keeps the subject matter engaging and surprisingly educational. Screenwriter Charles Randolph has been nominated for an Oscar in the category, ‘Best Adapted Screenplay,’ for his work on the film. Before our Oscar-Nominated Screenwriters Panel, we asked Charles to share a piece of writing advice on what it takes to achieve success in the film industry. The Big Short has been nominated for 5 Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture, Christian Bale for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Adam McKay for Best Director and Best Film Editing. Charles Randolph’s previous work includes Jake Gyllenhaal starrer Life & Other Drugs and The Interpreter and The Life of David Gale, starring Nicole Kidman.
Adam McKay, The Big Short writer/director previously wrote Ant-Man, and has announced that he is writing the upcoming Marvel Studios Picture, Ant-Man & The Wasp, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. McKay’s previous work as director includes modern Will Farrell comedy classics, including Anchorman, The Other Guys and Step Brothers.
