Godzilla Screening and Q&A with Max Borenstein
Max Borenstein, screenwriter of Godzilla, Talks to Our Students on Campus
On September 17, Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein arrived at our campus for a screening of Godzilla. Afterward, a Q&A was held with Jeff Goldsmith, producer and host of the podcast, Backstory. Max imparted on the audience some of the lessons he’s learned while writing the film. To begin, he reflected on his anticipation for writing the next Godzilla film.
“My biggest lesson for the future is being able to have the time to collaborate on the outline without production pressure.”
Regarding overcoming writer’s block, Max had simple advice.
“You hit walls, and that’s a big reason why outlining is so important.”
The writing schedule for Godzilla was compressed. Max recalled working with Director Gareth Edwards remotely.
“As I was writing the script, Gareth would be storyboarding.”
Part of the early setup of the film was Bryan Cranston’s belief in an environmental conspiracy theory. Max remembers pitching that element.
“The conspiracy angle was the first thing I came in with for Godzilla”
Max looked back and reflected on his favorite Godzilla film
“My favorite Godzilla movie is the very first one.”
Thank you all for coming to the screening, and stay tuned for news regarding upcoming screenings and Q&A’s!
