Meet James Cotten: the Filmmaker Behind Painted Woman, Demon Slayer and La Linea – The Line

,

“I’m a director. Writer. Producer. Actor. I’ve done it all. So I just call myself a storyteller.”

You can’t say James Cotten has ever shied away from hard work.

His refusal to confine himself to a single role within the film industry, although tough at times, is a testament to his versatility and dedication to his craft.

And it’s worked out pretty well.

James graduated from The Los Angeles Film School in 2001 with a film degree, and has gone on to have a career that has spanned the film industry.

Which is why, as we celebrate the 25th year of The Los Angeles Film School, we’re also celebrating James’ raw talent, sheer determination and industry success at our 5th Annual Spotlight Awards.

How did James shoot to success in the film industry?

James never knew that he wanted to make films. His success came after a long journey of self-discovery. And that journey began in acting.

James auditioned for a small part in Tuskegee Airmen, a film starring Laurence Fishburne and Andre Braugher. And he got the part! Only for them to cut it. Such is show business!

However, the plus side was that James ended up being an on-set extra for 30 days. This experience fueled his motivation and desire to make a living in entertainment. One thing was certain: James had found his calling.

No longer just a small-town kid quoting Spielberg, James ventured to Oklahoma City to train as an actor and eventually made his way to L.A., then to London, and then back to L.A. again.

For his next step James knew he needed more education. Which is where The L.A. Film School came in.

The L.A. Film School connection

James poured his heart and soul into his studies at The L.A. Film School, dedicating himself to learning day and night.

His hunger for knowledge and determination to master his craft were evident to everyone around him. It was here that he created his short film, Thunderbird.

His dedication didn’t go unnoticed. His teachers were so impressed by his work that they showcased Thunderbird during his graduation ceremony. This screening caught the attention of a significant figure: Roger Corman.

Three months later, James returned to L.A. for a meeting with Roger and landed his first directing gig in Hollywood: and so Demon Slayer was born.

The low-budget film directed by James and produced by Roger Corman—and involving many other talented L.A. Film School alumni—was released direct to DVD in 2003. And it’s also available on the SyFy channel to this day.

This opportunity marked big things. Following Demon Slayer, James has gone on to create other films such as Sugar Creek, Painted Woman and La Linea – The Line. He has also produced big Hollywood hits like Captain Fantastic and Pitch Perfect, and has even had the pleasure of working alongside other L.A. Film School alumni, including Phillip BladhBrandon TrostEric England, John M. Valerio and Tristan Thai.

James’ advice to budding creatives

James loves helping other creative minds achieve success.

“That’s what excites me—getting as many people invested and on their path. And it comes full circle. It means as much to me as it does to them.”

Here’s some of his advice to those starting out:

“Don’t look for fame.”

True happiness comes from within, not from fame. Focus on what makes you happy and fulfilled rather than seeking external validation.

“Learn as much as you can about every facet of the business.”

Understand every corner of the filmmaking business. Knowledge is what allows you to communicate and work to the best of your ability.

“You have to be willing to fail.”

Don’t be afraid of failure. Embrace it, learn from it and move forward. Success often comes after overcoming significant challenges.

“Talent will get you far, but being a good human being is essential.”

Don’t lose yourself. People want to work with those they can trust and rely on.
